Planting Edible and Native Plants at SJ Humanitas
Date and time: November 4th 2023, 8:30 am-12:00 pm
Location: Social Justice Academy
Description of Event:
On November 4, 2023, BlueSky LA partnered with Social Justice Humanitas Academy in San Fernando with the goal of beautifying their school garden. A total of 52 native plants and 42 edible plants were carefully selected for the garden. Volunteers helped with weeding and preparing the soil for edible and native plants. Edible plants were planted in the smaller raised beds.
Why?
By planting native and edible plants, the garden supports local biodiversity, encourages sustainable gardening, and provides fresh produce for students and families, improving nutrition. It offers an educational opportunity for students to learn about agriculture, sustainability, and the value of native plants, while also fostering a sense of environmental responsibility. The project strengthens community bonds through volunteer efforts and creates a sense of ownership, empowering students and locals.
