Our Mission

Blue Sky LA (“BSLA”) is a partnership between Breathe Southern California and Climate Cents to improve air quality, mitigate heat, and reduce climate emissions of the greater Los Angeles area. Through local, community-based volunteer projects that seek to improve air quality, mitigate heat, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, BlueSky LA aims to make skies blue over LA communities by the 2028 Olympics.

Air Pollution in Los Angeles

Los Angeles’s air pollution is among the worst in the United States, and the city does not currently meet the U.S. EPA’s national air quality standards for both PM2.5 and ozone.

According to the 2019 World Air Quality Report, the greater Los Angeles county contains 9 of the 15 most polluted U.S. cities for PM2.5 and has the worst ozone pollution in the United States.

Why is the air pollution in LA so bad?

Los Angeles is a city with over 10 million people, with roughly 6.5 million vehicles, most of which run on fossil fuels. Many Angelenos commute daily in cars, as the city isn’t very walkable. These vehicles emit heavy emissions and pollutants that combine to create a haze over the city. Los Angeles resides in a basin surrounded by tall mountains that prevents air pollutants from escaping, making the air pollution problem even worse.

Why should we care?

Air pollution can have negative effects on health ranging from respiratory infections and inflammation to premature deaths. It cost the city an estimated $21,000,000,000 in 2021*. Air quality is only going to get worse as we continue using fossil fuels.
