RootDown LA Soil Enhancement Project
With the Climate Action and RootDown LA
Date and time: January 28 2023, 8:30 am-12:00 pm
Location: George Washington Carver Middle School
Description of Event:
We joined forces with RootDown LA to enhance the soil and gardening beds at George Washington Carver Middle School in South LA on Saturday, January 28, 2023.
Volunteers added new soil to the garden beds, cleared invasive plants, and planted wildflowers to enhance the soil quality. The event concluded with a community luncheon featuring plant-based dishes prepared by Root Down LA.
Why?
Soil plays a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth. It provides the necessary nutrients for plant growth, aids in water absorption, and captures carbon dioxide. Healthy soil is vital in the fight against climate change. When establishing green spaces in Los Angeles, especially those geared towards food production, improving the quality of the soil is an initial step. RootDown LA emphasized the need to enhance the soil at George Washington Carver Middle School with the aim of producing more edible food for the local South LA community.
