Butterfly Garden at Montara School
Date and time: April 22nd & May 9th 2023, 8:30 am-12:00 pm
Location: Montara Elementary School
Description of Event:
On April 22, 2023, and May 9th, 2023, we collaborated with Montara Avenue Elementary School in South Gate to create multiple butterfly gardens on the school grounds.
The decision to partner with Montara stemmed from their expressed interest in establishing a butterfly garden and replacing the existing turf with a garden featuring native plants. The garden designs were a collaborative effort involving teachers, the principal, and Breathe Southern California. These gardens were strategically placed, with one at the school entrance, two on the campus, and one in the courtyard. In total, this project introduced around 243 native plants across the designated areas, including those known to attract endangered butterfly species.
Why?
This collaboration was a significant effort to support local ecosystems and provide habitats for endangered butterfly species. The garden designs were developed with input from teachers, the principal, and Breathe Southern California, and were placed strategically to enhance both the school's environment and educational opportunities. This initiative not only beautified the space but also raised awareness about conservation and sustainability among students and the local community.
