Ballona Wetlands Restoration

With The Friends of the Ballona Wetlands

Date and time: July 23rd, 8:30 am-12 pm

Location: 303 Culver Boulevard Playa del Rey, CA, 90293

Description of Event:

On July 23rd, 2022, Blue Sky LA partnered with the Friends of Ballona Wetlands to conduct a community volunteer restoration project on the Ballona Wetlands Saltwater Marsh. Volunteers assisted with clearing out invasive vegetation to allow for native plants to grow. By participating in this event, volunteers contributed to the restoration of the saltwater marsh which helps improve biodiversity, mitigate the impacts of climate change and improve our air quality, among many other things.

Why?

What are wetlands? Wetlands are areas of land that are covered by water permanently or seasonally. These areas can be salt water, brackish, or freshwater.

Wetlands are some of the most important ecosystems on the planet. They support a large variety of plants and animals. They help protect communities from floods and purify and store the water that comes through to the ocean. Wetlands are known to significantly have a higher carbon sequestering capacity, even when they cover less land, than forests. They store carbon within the vegetation, soils, and sediment. Unfortunately, there are many threats to wetlands every day. Some of these threats include alterations to the waterways, non-native species, land development, and pollution. Degraded wetlands are a threat to our planet and can become a source of carbon. Therefore it is critical that we make efforts to restore them.
