CNN #CallToEarthDay

Nov. 9 + 10

What:

In light of the UN Climate Conference, CNN International created a social media campaign (#CallToEarth) to highlight organizations around the world that are fighting climate change. CNN International seeks to showcase young people in their efforts to build a sustainable society, and they have asked organizations around the world to coordinate an event of climate action for November 10th, which is when they will help promote all participants on their social media and cable channels.

  • In finding participants for their #CallToEarth campaign, CNN reached out to Climate Cents & Breathe SoCal, because of their work supporting local projects – such as tree planting, urban gardens, solar installations, cool roofs, compost hubs, etc. – all of which clean the air, reduce heat, and fight climate change. For this event, both nonprofits decided to promo Eco Urban Gardens in El Monte for CNN’s #CallToEarthDay campaign.

Together, we will be posting activities organized by Eco Urban Gardens on social media from now until the event, all with the hashtag #CallToEarth. This will build interest and traffic, which will increase our chances of our work being featured by CNN.

  • CNN International will pull clips and stories from the #CallToEarth hashtag on Nov. 10th, and broadcast them on their channel. However - because PST is behind the international dateline, here in LA we will start posting on Nov. 9th and continue posting throughout those 24 hours

  • A shared Google folder will contain all the materials for the social media campaign. There will be folders for content, graphics, and hashtags for multiple people to participate in the #CallToEarth campaign.

  • The content of our posts will use Eco Urban Gardens to talk about how to fight climate change:

    • How trees, compost, vegetation provide shade and sequester carbon

    • How local food eliminates diesel emissions from transporting produce from long distances

    • How green space decreases heat, which contributes to bad air quality

The videos and photos will be of showing locals planting across all EUG sites, cultivating orchards, mulching trees, cultivating green fences and building compost. EUG will do a short outline to the various topics to film and to elaborate on processes.

La Madera Community Garden Volunteer Day:

Students will install a brand new compost facility with three tiers donated by the Mariposa-Nabi community garden. We will begin by incorporating 3 elements into the first compost bin, leaves, green waste from plant trimmings and water.

Students will install drought tolerant edible plants at the front entrance of the garden for a communal space where all members can harvest and take fruit when they want. Community gardens reduce carbon footprints by providing local food, carbon sequestration from plants, and organic soil.

The sites operated by Eco Urban Gardens:

LA MADERA Community Garden:

This community garden is approximately a half acre and located in the heart of El Monte. It hosts 42 community garden plots, rented monthly by local community members. Garden members care for their plots as well as the communal spaces in the garden. La Madera offers workshops and regular volunteer days to the surrounding community in both English and Spanish. The garden hosts an all members volunteer day on the first Sunday of every month. Some of the members have been with the garden for over 10 years. Recently members began rebuilding their beehive oven for baking Pan de Muerto and are planning a candle lighting ceremony for Dia de los Muertos. The garden also recently received a composting facility donated by Mariposa-Nabi Community Garden.

This garden along with member plots has a large area for communal events, fruit trees and vines for all members to enjoy and communal gardening spaces for teaching workshops and hosting volunteer events. Eco Urban Gardens has been working with La Madera Community Garden since August of 2020 to help bring visibility to this essential urban green space.
