Description of Event:

On June 25th, 2022, Lopez Urban Farm is hosting a volunteer tree planting event where the following trees will be planted: 2 Desert Museum Palo Verdes, 4 California Bay Laurels, 2 Western Redbuds, and 2 Black Elderberry trees all in 15-gallon container size.

Volunteers will help contribute to the expansion of Pomona’s urban forest, help improve the local air quality, and provide a cool place for the community to enjoy shade during the hotter summer months coming as a result of climate change.

Benefits of the Event:

  • Strengthening Pomona's Urban Forest- An urban forest is a network of woodlands and trees that are part of the city landscape. The urban forest can be comprised by parks, street trees, trees on home properties, and any places with trees as well as the vegetation underneath the trees. One of the least costly ways to help improve our local air quality and provide shade for our communities is by strengthening and expanding the urban forest canopy. We can do this by supporting green networks through the current maintenance of trees, the soils and planting of more trees.

  •  Benefits of planting trees: Planting more trees will provide many benefits to Pomona including:

    • Air Quality: Filters pollutants and particulate matter from the air

    • Shade and Cooling: Ambient temperatures near trees tend to be lower because trees help cool the air through shade and transpiration

    • Water: Stormwater capture/groundwater recharge

    • Soil: provide nutrients for the soil

    • Wildlife: Trees are home to a variety of species and migrating species

    • Health: Reduces stress, improves mental health, people are more likely to go for a walk or bike ride in places with more trees

    • Energy Savings $: Houses with trees tend to be cooler reducing the need for air conditioners during the hotter months. This also helps reduce ghg emissions needed for energy.

    • And much more!

California Native Plant Benefits: The trees that will be planted are California Natives. California Native plants have developed adaptations to thrive in our local climates and soils. Most of these plants need minimal water and can survive during long periods of drought. These plants also are resistant to pests and diseases and need minimal maintenance.

Description of Hosting Organization

Lopez Urban Farm is a community-based collaboration between local community groups, organizations, businesses, universities, teachers, students, and community members that came together to create a working urban farm using a 3-acre lot in Pomona, California. Located in Pomona’s District 2, Lopez Urban Farm is an urban agriculture project of the 501(c)(3) Community Partners 4 Innovation (CP4I). The organization’s core values are Transform, Restore, Empower and Be Well.

As a community food hub and education space, Lopez Urban Farm serves the children and families in Pomona’s District 2 by fostering greater access to clean food and providing nutrition and environmental education to all. While the Farm serves the District 2 community at large, there is a special focus on connecting with the 563 students of Lopez Elementary School, which is adjacent to the farm location.

Since planting roots in 2014, some of the most important achievements of the urban agriculture projects by CP4I include the following:

● The community has rallied around these projects leading to 35 collaborative partners and a team of 20 dedicated farm volunteers.

● The volunteer-based farm team has grown and distributed more than 100,000 pounds of organic produce to nearby residents.
