New Garden at la Puente High School

With La Puente High School

Date and time: February 4th, 8:30 am-12 pm

Location: La Puente High School

Description of Event:

On February 24, 2024, we joined forces with La Puente High School (LPHS) to create a vibrant green space on campus, enhancing the lunch area for students. Southern California Edison sponsored this initiative. The garden provides a pleasant environment and showcases locally grown edible produce, contributing to improved air quality.

Volunteers from SoCal Edison, along with students and staff, constructed elevated beds featuring a mix of native and edible plants chosen for seasonal suitability. Plants included in the planters were California Lilacs, California Poppies, Basil, Jalapeño, Tomato, Rosemary, and others. The planters were carefully curated to foster companion planting, promoting a balanced ecosystem and reducing the need for pesticides.

Why?

Establishing a green space at LPHS exemplifies the power of community-driven initiatives in addressing environmental, educational, and social challenges. It provides a platform for learning and growth and fosters resilience and empowerment within the school community.
