UPCOMING EVENT

Description of Event:

On August 27th, 2022, Blue Sky LA and Root Down LA hosted a volunteer event at George Carver Middle School. Volunteers assisted in planting trees, mulching the garden, removing invasive plants and composting.

On January 28th, 2023, Blue Sky LA and Root Down LA are partnering again for another volunteer event where volunteers will be adding new soil to the garden beds onsite and assisting with the garden beautification.

Why do soils matter for climate action?

Healthy soil is essential for all living life on earth. It provides the nutrients needed for all plants to grow, it helps absorb water and captures carbon dioxide. Part of the initial work in the development of green spaces in Los Angeles, especially those that involve growing food, involves improving the soils that have been affected by many changes due to land development and use. Root Down LA has shared with us the need to improve the soils at George Washington Carver Middle School with the goal of being able to produce more food for the surrounding community of South Central.

Description of Hosting Organization

Root Down LA is a non-profit organization that developed a youth-driven neighborhood food system to empower local youth to eat healthier and promote youth entrepreneurship. The model they developed is simple: RDLA creates demand for healthy eating by providing education and workshops to the youth and community, then supply is created through their gardens and then the youth are supported to create business ventures such as growing their food, selling it and creating products out of the produce.
