Description of Event:
Blue Sky LA partnered with Voces Magnet Eco Club in Sun Valley on a tree planting, tree giveaway, and movie night event at their H.O.P.E Garden-themed Dia de Los Muertos. Blue Sky LA gave away 43 fruit trees and planted 6 trees inside the HOPE Garden.
Voces Magnet Eco Club and Blue Sky LA strategized the tree planting to be along the edges of the fence so that members of the community have access to the fruit coming from some of the trees being planted and obtain shade.
BSLA partnered with Voces Magnet to host a community Dia De Los Muertos event to celebrate the day of the dead and gave away trees for members of the community. In the process of planning this event, we were informed that the community is excited to obtain more trees as the community is affected by poor air quality due to the 5 freeway nearby. The community is also in need of more shade. Participation in previous tree giveaways was high.
Why?
H.O.P.E garden at the VOCES Magnet is an amazing resource for the youth and local community of Sun Valley. They provide garden plots for families to grow their own food, they provide the garden as a space for P’oktap’ok (Mayan Ball) games, Aztec dance classes, movie nights, festivals, music in the garden, education workshops, astronomy nights, and much more.
