Restoration Day at Willow Springs Park

With Office of Climate Action and Sustainability for the City of Long Beach

Date and time: May 31st, 8:30 am-12 pm

Location: Willow Springs in Long Beach

Description of Event:

On May 31st, we teamed up with the Office of Climate Action and Sustainability for the City of Long Beach to host a restoration day at Willow Springs Park in Long Beach. This event was sponsored by Southern California Edison. At this event, volunteers gathered to remove invasive species, such as yellow mustard, to allow native plants to thrive.

Willow Springs Park has undergone a major transformation from degradation to restoration, a process that began in 2017. Thanks to these efforts, native plants such as sagebrush, buckwheat, and others are now flourishing in the park.

Why?

It's crucial to continue preventing invasive plants from dominating this beautiful landscape. Additionally, Willow Springs has restored wetlands that offer numerous environmental benefits, including water-quality improvement, erosion control, and habitat enhancement. This park has become a model of a biodiversity hotspot, demonstrating how similar projects can be successfully implemented in Long Beach and other cities as well.
